Around the Pointe Saint Mathieu, an atmosphere of history and symbolism still hovers. The starting point of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, it is the most western point of France. The impressive cliffs serve as a promontory for the Saint Mathieu lighthouse, whose white and red colours contrast with the deep blue of the ocean. Its 29-mile range helps to signal ships as far as the Brest Narrows. It is possible to visit the lighthouse and enjoy the magnificent view of the land sinking into the sea from its 37-metre high tower.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Nearby, you can visit the memorial to the sailors who died for France and the ruins of the ancient 11th century abbey of Saint Mathieu de Fine-Terre, a listed building that was once an important place of worship in the region and a pilgrimage site. It is said to be the remaining witness of an even older abbey, founded by Saint Tanguy in the 6th century.
From the Hostellerie de la Pointe Saint Mathieu, Finist\u00e8re can also be explored on foot thanks to the GR34 trail, which runs along the coast. Since 1791, its 1800 km of paths through the moors offer sumptuous landscapes, among the most beautiful panoramas of Brittany, and a breathtaking view of the islands.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
